Places in Cambodia That Will Astonish You
Sambor Prei Kuk
The first impressive place during your Cambodia tours is Sambor Prei Kuk Temple Zone, a wonderland of Buddhist temples in Cambodia. The zone was once the capital city for an empire that spanned over most of Southeast Asia. Its architectural achievements laid down some important foundations with those found later at Khmer ruins like Angkor Wat.
This area covers 840 hectares – around three times as much land mass as New York’s Central Park or London’s Hyde Park combined (which also doesn’t include any gardens). The temples of Siem Reap are a spectacular collection that will not be forgotten. The three main temple complexes, Sambor, Prasat Yeai (Southern Group), and Tao, include the smaller groups such as Sandan for their variety in size and structure.
Still, all differ by an enclosure with square brick walls or laterite ramparts around them. Each complex has an impressive central tower on top surrounded by other towers and turrets at ground level. There’s something here to suit every taste. The buildings and structures of the ancient city are breathtaking. An extensive ensemble, including 102 hydraulic features, displays technical ingenuity in planning. It’s hard not to be impressed by these accomplishments.
Ta Prohm
Ta Prohm is an 1186-year-old Buddhist temple in Cambodia, originally built to honor the mother of Jayavarman VII. The inscription discovered at this temple provides a wealth of information about the people who lived there and their relationship with Hinduism. A temple is a place of worship for practitioners from all over the world. More than 600 dancers and 2700 officials maintain this sacred space, ensuring it remains in pristine condition, with almost 80 thousand people required to attend each day.
Ta Prohm’s alcoves and niches house hundreds of stone figures, many with their heads smashed in. The entire complex has been overgrown by vegetation that thrives in its moist climate. The floors are covered with soft green moss, which makes footing difficult at times for those who wish to explore this lost city on their own accord. Ta Prohm is mostly known for a tree that has the “Tomb Raider” vibe. If you love this movie, you might find this tree’s appearance familiar and interesting. There is no better way to start your day than at the temple. Visit early in order not only to see it but also to explore its iconic roots and complicated corridors that will take you throughout this awe-inspiring place.
Kep-Sur-Mer
Kep-Sur-Mer (sometimes shortened to “Kep”) was founded in 1908 by royal proclamation and served as a climate station, a coastal retreat for French colonial bureaucrats and their families. The deserted luxury mansions have now formed a beachside ghost town. Cambodia experienced a period of relative stability following the country’s independence from France in 1953. It encouraged international investment and development by an elite.
Kep became prime real estate for this boom as they built villas along its golden-orange coastline that are still present today. Abandoned in the 1970s, some reports suggest that Kep’s buildings were specifically targeted for destruction by the Khmer Rouge and stripped of valuables following 1979. Imagine a time when the villas of Kep were so overgrown with flora that they could be explored by those brave enough. This period may not last long, though, as increased tourism and foreign investment have brought characteristic increases in both countries alike – bringing changes to this once idyllic location for adventure seekers everywhere.
Phimeanakas
Another ideal place during a private tour Vietnam Cambodia is the Phimeanakas temple. It was a Buddhist holy site built in the Khleang style. The name “Celestial Palace” is what it translates to, meaning this place must have been something special. The golden spire of Angkor is a symbol not only for the glory and power of King Suryavarman I but also his divine nature. The temple was built in tribute to himself during the beginning stages when he emerged from obscurity into royalty.
Along the top of the platform, there are covered galleries that were first built at Angkor. At each corner is an elephant statue as guardian angels to protect this cruciform sanctuary from all angles. The structure is a stepped pyramid with an impressive height of 35 meters and a width measuring 28 meters at the base. A flight of steep, Olin marble stairs leads to its peak where you can find lions guardiuling all four sides. The temple is a hidden treasure amongst the trees. Built around 200 years ago, it now sits atmospherically and peacefully beneath lush boughs that have since covered up Angkor Thom’s cityscape.
Neak Pean
A small wooden bridge leads visitors through the Neak Pean Temple at its center, surrounded by a beautiful garden full of pink lotuses. The temple stands in the middle of a beautiful pond, surrounded by four smaller ones representing fire, water, earth, and wind. This site symbolizes Lake Anavatapta, which was believed to have healing powers for those who went there. It’s said that they could find peace if their troubles were too much on land elsewhere.
The temple was once a place of healing and rejuvenation. Visitors would immerse themselves in the different ponds based on their ailments, but today it seems more serene than ever before. One can find this incredible structure near Preah Khan Temple at Angkor Archaeological Park (Cambodia).
