Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
Tuol Sleng is a former high school in the central Phnom Penh area. It offers a sobering museum experience for visitors interested in the terrifying role during the Khmer Rouge regime. Upon coming to power, Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge opened an interrogation and detention center on a former French colonist school. The school was converted into Security Prison 21.
Around 20,000 prisoners were held at S-21 and were either tortured to death or sent to Choeung Ek, where they were killed; only seven managed to survive. As one enters into his dark museum, you will see the walls are dotted with blood, along with the stained bricks and various other brutal torture tools still left behind by a brutal regime whose existence has now been nothing but a distant nightmare in recent years. Every two years, staff members invite living monks to offer their prayers for peace for the lives lost under that brutal dictatorship.
Choeung Ek Genocidal Center
Under the reign of the Khmer Rouge from 1975 to 1979, Cambodia suffered an estimated 2 million civilian deaths due to systematic torture and genocide. While there is no accurate count, approximately 9,000 victims have been discovered at Choeung Ek or the Killing Fields – around 30 km North of Cambodia’s capital city of Phnom Penh. The historic site has been restored to a memorial and spacious monument. This allows visitors to look upon and explore the tombs from all angles.
Bokor Mountain, Kampot
This landmark is home to many wondrous marvels, including cool-climate regardless of season or even time-of-day. Sour Bokor Resort is renowned for its comfortable rooms and breathtaking views available for guests to enjoy from the hotel’s location atop the mountain. The Bokor Mountain Station is an incredibly unique place. It is well-known for its complex structures, including a hotel, a casino, Catholic Church buildings, and other settlements.
Due to its architectural legacy yet tragic past, it is regarded as the most reputable structure in Cambodia. French administrators built it in the 1800s as a retreat from Cambodian heat, humidity, and messy shelters primarily for elite colonial families. The construction of this building was reported to be made possible via heavy taxes imposed on Cambodian residents.
Reports claim that almost 1,000 individuals lost their lives because of harsh working conditions while constructing the building in 1925. After the French left, locals who made a living by running the resort and catering to tourists began a revival that was eventually abandoned when the Khmer Rouge took over in the ’60s. Today, the Le Bokor building is reopened for visitors to explore. There is no entry cost for adventurous visitors, and you can visit both day and night. If you are looking for a Cambodia customized tours, this is the place you should not miss out.
Ghost House
IT was a wooden Khmer Rouge house located on National Highway No. 5. However, a cemented temple around this house a few years ago, turning this once rundown place into a mysterious place for worship and prayer for Cambodians who believe in superstition. According to the locals living nearby, this building was erected when fewer buildings were in the vicinity.
The first owners of the house, a young couple, once dreamed that a ghostly woman dressed in white had appeared and offered to buy their house for three taels of gold. The couple accepted her offer and handed over three pieces of gold – then fell asleep. When they woke up in the morning, the gold turned out to be just outside their front door! But even though they could have lived happily ever after and sold their property for millions, they refused to move away from their home due to family and friends living nearby – even though she warned them often during the day with loud thumps coming from all sides.
One day, however, after entering deep into an unused next-door field early one morning when curiosity got the better of them, they found not an ounce of money around them. The house has stood empty since that time. Some say its abandonment was due to an episode in 2004 when a film was being shot inside the “haunted house”. One of the actresses swore she became possessed by an evil spirit during filming and led her to attack other production team members with an ax. While it’s said, this story is an urban legend. No one has confirmed or denied these claims as credible sources could not be found.
Independence Hotel
Locals of Sihanoukville, Cambodia, have long believed that the Twelve Ray Hotel is for ghosts. In 1964, construction began on the hotel by its wealthy owner. After barely two years in 1966, it opened to the public as an ultra-luxurious escape from the Sihanoukville heat. But then, in 1979, Khmer Rouge soldiers made this place their sniper’s nest hideout. Rumors abound about scenes of barbarism carried out on enemies held captive inside these hallowed walls to this very day.
In 1982, authorities reopened the property, and in 1990, it became a military base for UNTAC forces. In 2007, the hotel underwent renovations for reopening under DARA Management as “The Independence Hotel.” Many claim to have seen ghosts roaming among its abandoned floors.
